About
Thirty years between the breach and the headline.
I'm Alan Crowetz — MBA, MCSE — founder of InfoStream (1994), on-air cybersecurity expert for WPTV NBC 5 and WFLX FOX 29, IT auditor for Palm Beach County municipalities, and one of the few people in South Florida who has been doing this since before the public knew the word "cybersecurity."
The InfoStream years (1994 onward)
I founded InfoStream in 1994 with a thesis that's now obvious and was then heretical: most small and mid-sized organizations would never have the in-house depth to defend themselves against the threats the internet was about to bring, and an outside firm with discipline, plain-English communication, and skin in the game would be more valuable than any single full-time IT hire.
Over three decades we proved it out across municipalities, healthcare organizations, regulated industries, the legal sector, cultural institutions, and hundreds of Florida small and mid-sized businesses. We did the unsexy, load-bearing work — backups that actually restored, change controls that survived audits, incident response that didn't make the next morning's news.
Industry recognition followed the work, not the other way around. InfoStream landed on MSPMentor's Top 100 Global Small Business IT Firms and ChannelE2E's Top 100 Vertical Market MSPs (2016), held a 5-star rating on the world's largest independent computer-engineer listing service, and was a featured firm on Microsoft's Pinpoint directory.
After three decades I exited day-to-day operation of InfoStream. The relationships, the case knowledge, and the pattern recognition built across those years came with me — and that's what I bring to the engagements I take on now.
On the air for South Florida
For more than a decade I've served as the on-air cybersecurity expert for WPTV NBC 5 and WFLX FOX 29, with regular appearances also on WPBF (ABC) and WPEC (CBS) — every one of the major South Florida network affiliates. Beyond the nightly newscasts, I've appeared on long-form segments including The Now, To The Point, and the South Florida Business Report, and have been quoted in newspaper and online outlets across the region.
Producers call when news breaks because the expectation is the same every time: translate a fast-moving technical story into something a viewer can actually do something about, in the next thirty minutes. More than 100 TV stories in, that voice and that role are continuing — see the Media & Speaking page for booking.
Expert witness work
I serve as an expert witness for law firms on cases involving information technology, the internet, cybersecurity, electronic evidence, and digital business operations. The work draws on the same skill the news work demands — translating complex technical facts into testimony a judge and jury can actually follow, without ever overstating what the evidence supports. Counsel can reach me directly to discuss a matter under consideration; engagement specifics are on the Expert Witness page.
Auditing the public sector and beyond
Independent IT and cybersecurity audits have been a throughline across all thirty years. Municipal and agency clients have included the Town of Palm Beach, Town of Jupiter, City of Delray Beach, City of Boynton Beach, the Village of Wellington, the Village of Royal Palm Beach, the Health Care District of Palm Beach County, the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County, and the Children's Services Council of Palm Beach County. Cultural-institution work has included the Kravis Center, the South Florida Fair, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, and The Society of the Four Arts.
Outside-eyes work demands one thing above all else: the willingness to write down what's actually true, not what the people who hired you would prefer to read. Three decades in, that's still the most valuable thing the role does.
Teaching, advising, convening
I've served as a guest instructor at South Florida universities, teaching cybersecurity, IT operations, and AI in business to graduate and undergraduate audiences. Teaching forces clarity — and clarity is the same skill the news needs, the courtroom needs, and the board needs.
I sit on the Advisory Board of Palm Beach Atlantic University's Rinker School of Business, hold membership in the FBI's InfraGard program (a vetted public–private partnership for critical-infrastructure protection), and founded and still manage a worldwide working group of cloud service providers and consultants who advise small and mid-sized businesses.
How I work
Outside expert, not vendor. I don't sell hardware, resell software licenses, or take referral fees from products I recommend. The engagement is the engagement. I take on a small number of matters at a time so each one gets actual attention, and I'm explicit about scope at the outset so nobody is surprised at the back end.
Plain English over jargon. Whether the audience is a viewer with thirty minutes to act, a judge sitting through a technical deposition, a town council reviewing an audit, or a CEO weighing an AI rollout — the answer is only useful if the audience can act on it.

Off the clock
Endurance sports have been the through-line outside the work for decades — triathlons, century (100-mile) bike rides, water skiing, racquetball, rollerblading, snow skiing. The discipline that gets you through mile 85 of a century ride is, it turns out, recognizably the same discipline that gets you through hour eleven of an incident-response call.
What I take on now
Six practice areas, each chosen because pattern recognition built across thirty years actually does the work: IT auditing, expert witness, cybersecurity advisory, AI training and implementation, media and speaking, and SMB growth advisory.
